Where is O Palmeiral?

Travessa de São José 1, in Príncipe Real, Lisbon. A few steps from Jardim do Príncipe Real and a five-minute walk from Bairro Alto. The palm tree at the entrance is hard to miss.

What kind of food do you serve?

Daily cooking with local ingredients. Tortellini in brodo, a pint of prawns with piri-piri, aubergine parmigiana, vitello tonnato, chicken cacciatore, pork chop. The menu changes with the seasons and whatever the market brings. The menu moves freely between both traditions.

Do I need a reservation?

Recommended, especially for dinner and weekends. Book online or call +351 21 397 1540. We hold reservations for 15 minutes — if you're running late, give us a ring.

What are your opening hours?

Open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Check the location page for current times.

Do you have a terrace?

Yes — 21 seats outside on Travessa de São José, plus 20 inside. The terrace is open year-round. On a warm evening, it's one of the nicest places to sit in Príncipe Real.

Can I book the restaurant privately?

Is it good for a romantic dinner?

Very. In the evening, white tablecloths and candlelight. An 1870s room in one of Lisbon's most beautiful neighbourhoods. Ideal for date nights, anniversaries, and proposals — if you can handle proposing in a room of twenty.

Do you serve cocktails?

Negroni (classic or mezcal), Martini, Montenegro Sour, aperitivo cocktail, and a short list of long drinks. The bar is particularly good between six and eight — aperitivo hour.

Do you serve breakfast?

Yes. Coffee from Lisbon's best roasters, pastries, eggs. A morning in Príncipe Real without the queue.

What's the history of the building?

The space at Travessa de São José 1 was a grocery shop opened in 1870. The original tiles, wooden counter, and room proportions are intact. O Palmeiral opened in July 2025. We're pursuing recognition under Lisbon's Lojas com História heritage programme.

Who runs O Palmeiral?

Daniel Bernardi — London-born, Italo-Irish, moved from London to Lisbon. O Palmeiral is part of Amorvero, a hospitality platform focused on the custodianship of legacy venues.

Do you have vegetarian or gluten-free options?

The kitchen operates almost exclusively gluten-free. The only dishes containing gluten are the tortellini, the tiramisù, the bread (available gluten-free) and the grissini. The aubergine parmigiana is a popular vegetarian main.

How much does dinner cost?

Roughly €30–50 per person for dinner with wine, depending on what you order. Lunch is lighter. We accept cash, card, and MB Way.

Is it near the Príncipe Real garden?

Immediately. We're at the corner of Travessa de São José, directly off Jardim do Príncipe Real. One of the closest restaurants to the park.

What's your cancellation policy?

Please don't cancel last minute. And please, please don't ghost a booking. We're a small house and every empty table is felt. If plans change, call us — we understand.
