The 1870 Grocery Shop
What lived at Rua de São Marçal 1 before we did — and why it matters.
Italian restaurant, bar and terrace in Príncipe Real, Lisbon. Inside a grocery shop since 1870. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
O Palmeiral lives inside a grocery shop originally opened in 1870 on Rua de São Marçal, a few steps from Príncipe Real garden. The tiles on the wall, the wooden counter, the proportions of the room — all original. What's changed is what comes out of the kitchen.
Today it's part Lisbon, part Rome — daily cooking with Italian DNA that has embraced the flavours of Portugal. Tortellini in brodo alongside a pint of prawns with piri-piri. Aubergine parmigiana and then a pork chop. The wine list is short and honest. The cocktails are better than they need to be.
Twenty seats inside, twenty-one on the terrace. No pretension, no formula. Just a small house that takes the food and the welcome seriously.

Lunch: A concise daily menu — two or three primi, a couple of secondi, whatever the market brought. Quick if you need it, long if you don't.
Dinner: White tablecloths go on, candles come out. The full menu runs from snacks and cocktails through to the kind of meal that makes you cancel tomorrow morning. Roman trattoria spirit, Lisbon prices.
At the bar: Negronis, Martinis, Montenegro Sour. The aperitivo hour here is one of Príncipe Real's better-kept secrets.
For groups of 14 to 20, you can shut the doors and turn the music up — O Palmeiral is exclusively yours. Birthday dinners, company gatherings, the kind of evening where everyone actually talks to each other.
We'll build a menu together. You bring the people.
